Components of a Bike Trailer

Like any other mechanical equipment, a bike trailer is made up of different parts. It is important to know the different parts of a bike trailer so that you will become familiar with its function.

First let's start with the frame. It is usually made of metal or wood. Commercially sold bike trailers often use metal frames usually made of steel alloy or aluminum tubing which is durable. Home made trailer frames use wood and are not as durable as their metal counterparts. The frame is where you place your load be it light or heavy so be sure to choose a bike trailer with sturdy frame.

The wheel of a bike trailer comes in different sizes. Generally, the larger the wheel, the smoother your bike trailer will move. Most wheels sold in the market are light and durable.

The axle of a bike trailer mounts directly on the frame or uses a quick release mechanism for it to connect to the frame. Using two separate axles for two wheel trailers allow the load carrying area to be between the wheels, keeping the center of gravity low.

The fender or mud guard protects your cargo from accidental road spray or dirt. It is usually made up of hard plastic and in heavy trailers it is also used to carry heavy loads.
